Design Innovation that makes $40 Billion for a furniture brand

I have come up with this case study when I was searching for a wooden tabletop for my PC as I have seen on YouTube when I visited my nearby shops all they have is what I called process food of furniture no customization, low-quality raw Material, and unskilled Chefs i.e. carpenters. Hence the idea strikes in my mind in order to get that wooden feeling with customizing a design that fits well while sitting and working long hours, I needed to design my own furniture and give this design with certain guidelines to any unskilled carpenter so they don’t have to put their imagination in thinking of look & feel and they give their best in making pc table. This is where I came to know about the brand name IKEA.

This effect is based upon the popular principle :

Labour leads to love

Now, there are other by-products of such innovation that come into play, When it comes to logistics one of the most important factors in cost-cutting is the volume and efficiency of the product.

So practically you cannot fit your couch in a car even if it’s a truck there is a high probability of hurting while delivering your lovely couch upon which you imagine relaxing after a tough working day.

IKEA furniture comes in fragmented format i.e individual parts can fit in the box, hence volume occupancy is extremely low as compare to other furniture brands so logistics revolutionize and benefits the warehouse-inventory retailers

IKEA find its recipe of low-cost, high-volume products which results in making them $40 billion company.

Designer’s Takeaway from IKEA :

  • Task you have given to the user should be easy to complete.
  • Users should have to put a certain degree of effort to complete their task.
  • You must make sure the task is designed in such a way that it can be successfully completed by the customers
